Get creative and make this simple toy using a few pieces of wood and some Resene testpots.

You will need

50mm x 100mm timber (approximately 500mm)
20mm x 100mm timber (approximately 250mm)
40mm large headed screws, 65mm screws
3.5mm drill bit, 50mm hole cutting attachment
Clean cloth
Electric drill, Mitre saw
Paintbrushes, Pencil, Putty knife or similar
Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpots of Resene Alabaster, Resene Guardsman Red and Resene Nero
Sandpaper, Screwdrivers, Tape measure, Wood filler

To get the look: Mark painted the background table with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Turbo.

Other ideas: For a dark blue effect paint the van using a Resene testpot of Resene Surfs Up.

How to make a wooden toy van

Step one
Cut one piece of 50mm x 100mm timber measuring 250mm using the mitre saw. Set the blade at a 45-degree slant and cut another piece measuring 200mm. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step two
Fix the two pieces of timber together, as shown, using 65mm screws – drill pilot holes first.

Step three
Use the hole cutting attachment and electric drill to cut out four 50mm circles from the 20mm x 100mm timber. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step four
Fill any joins and imperfections in the timber with wood filler. Once dry, sand smooth and then wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the body and wheels of the van and allow to dry.

Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Nero to the wheels and two coats of Resene Guardsman Red to the body of the van, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step seven
Paint windscreen, window, door handle and headlight details with Resene Nero and, once this is dry, add other details, as shown, using Resene Alabaster. Allow to dry.
