How to stain a compost bin

Transform a humble wooden compost bin into a stylish garden feature using Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain.

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: a wooden compost bin (this stackable kitset came from Mitre 10 Mega), a paintbrush, paint stirrer, screwdriver and scissors. Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Smokey Ash and Resene Pitch Black.

To get the look: Mark painted the background shed wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Soft Mint.

Other ideas: For a rich green combination try Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Fern Frond and Resene Rangitoto.

Instructions

Step one
Unpack the kitset compost bin, removing any staples with a screwdriver.

Step two
Stir the Resene Pitch Black with a wooden paint stirrer, as shown.

Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Pitch Black to eight of the wooden kitset pieces, as shown.

Step four
Once touch dry, turn the kitset pieces over and paint the other sides with Resene Pitch Black.

Step five
Repeat steps 2 to 4 using the remaining eight kitset pieces and Resene Smokey Ash. Allow 24 hours to dry and apply a second coat of both colours. Allow to dry for a further 24 hours.
