Turn an old school chair from drab to fab with a little bit of with Mark Rayner.

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: a wooden school chair, clean cloth, masking tape, paintbrush and sandpaper.
Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Black.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Quarter Silver Chalice.

Other ideas: To colour the wood, use a waterborne stain from the Resene Colorwood range and allow to dry before applying the Resene Aquaclear .

Step one
Carefully sand the wooden parts of the chair, following the grain, to remove the old varnish.

Step two
Lightly sand the metal frame of the chair to ‘key’ the surface.

Step three
Wipe off any sanding dust and residue with a clean cloth.

Step four
Mask off where the metal frame touches the wood, as shown.

Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the metal frame and allow to dry.

Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Black to the metal frame, allowing two hours for the first coat to dry.

Step seven
Before the second coat has dried, carefully remove the masking tape. Allow two hours to dry.

Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear gloss to the wooden parts of the chair, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
