How to make a colourful terracotta planter for winter
Mark Rayner shows you how to transform a humble terracotta pot into a bright and cheerful planter for some potted winter colour.
You will need: Terracotta pot, damp cloth, good quality potting mix, low-tack masking tape, and a paintbrush. Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene testpots of Resene Alabaster and Resene Wild Thing, winter potted colour such as pansies or polyanthus.
To get the look: Mark painted the outdoor table with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Woodstock.
Here’s another colour option: For a rich gold effect, paint the pot with one coat of Resene Porsche and two coats of Resene Bullion.
Instructions
Step 1
Wipe off any dust from the terracotta pot with a damp cloth and allow to dry. if the pot has been outside for any length of time it may be necessary to treat it with Resene Moss & Mould Killer.
Step 2
Apply one coat of Resene Terracotta sealer to the outside and underneath of the pot.
Step 3
Turn the pot over and apply one coat of Resene Terracotta sealer to the inside and top rim of the pot. Allow to dry.
Step 4
Apply one coat of Resene Alabaster to the outside and inner rim of the pot, as shown. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 5
Apply a second coat of Resene Alabaster to the outer rim and inner rim of the pot. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 6
Mask off the outer rim, as shown, using low-tack masking tape.
Step 7
Apply one coat of Resene Wild Thing to the outside of the pot, as shown. Allow two hours for the first coat to dry.
Step 8
Apply a second coat of Resene Wild Thing to the outside of the pot, as shown.
Step 9
Carefully remove the low-tack masking tape before the second coat has dried. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 10
Plant up with good quality potting mix and winter potted colour.
