How to make tin can fence pots

How to make this plant pot from a painted can

You will need: a 40mm jolt head galvanised nail, tin can, sandpaper, clean cloth, hammer, nail punch, paintbrush and a paint stirrer. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and a Resene testpot of Resene Pohutukawa.

To get the look: Mark stained the background fence with Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Grey Green.

Here's another idea: Hang a group of painted tin cans on a fence to create an instant vertical herb garden.

Step 1 how to make this plant pot from a painted can

Use the hammer and nail punch to carefully punch a hole in the back of the tin can, as shown – ensure the hole is large enough to fit over the 40mm nail head.

In the same way, punch a few drainage holes in the base of the can.

Lightly sand the outside of the tin can as this will help to 'key' the surface. Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Stir the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer with a paint stirrer.

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the inside and outside of the tin can and allow two hours to dry.

Apply one coat of Resene Pohutukawa to the outside of the tin can and allow two hours to dry.

Apply a second coat of Resene Pohutukawa to the outside of the tin can and allow two hours to dry.

Step 8: Hammer the 40mm nail into the fence at an approximate 45-degree angle, as shown. Plant up your pot with good-quality potting mix and your favourite potted colour and hang the pot from the protruding nail.
