How to make a doormat from decking timber
Decking doormat – Mark Rayner creates a handy all-weather doormat using grooved decking and Resene Woodsman Decking Stain.
You will need: approx. 5.5m of 100mm x 25mm treated pine decking, exterior PVA glue, 35mm treated pine self-embedding screws, paintbrush, paint stirrer, pencil, sandpaper, saw, screwdriver, set square and tape measure, Resene Woodsman Decking Stain tinted to Resene Kwila.

Instructions
Step 1
Measure five 800mm lengths of treated pine decking. Use the back of the saw to mark 90-degree cutting lines across the timber, as shown.
Step 2
Use these pencil lines to saw the decking into five equal lengths (these will form the top of the doormat).
Step 3
In the same way, measure, mark and cut three 480mm lengths of decking to form the underneath supports. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 4
Place the five 800mm lengths of timber on a flat and stable surface, grooved side down, as shown. Leave a small gap between each.
Step 5
Position one of the underneath supports, grooved side up across one edge, as shown, and fix with PVA glue and 35mm screws. Use a set square to ensure the timber is at right angles.
Step 6
In the same way, fix a second support along the other edge. Again, use the set square to ensure the timber is at right angles.
Step 7
Mark the midway point across the underside of the timber doormat.
Step 8
Using this pencil mark as a guide, fix the third support across the centre of the doormat, as shown.
Step 9
Carefully stir the Resene Woodsman Decking Stain with a paint stirrer.
Step 10
Apply one coat of Resene Woodsman Decking Stain to the doormat, brushing in the direction of the grain.
Step 11
Continue until the entire doormat is coated with Resene Woodsman Decking Stain. Allow 24 hours before using doormat.
