How to make a propagation station
DIY project from NZ Gardener magazine
Grow stem cuttings in water with Jacob Leaf’s simple hanging propagator.
You will need
- 1 x 280mm x 40mm x 10mm radiata SD moulding
- Pencil
- Combination square or ruler
- Drill, 4mm drill bit
- Speed clamps or vice
- 25mm spade bit or auger bit
- Half-round wood file or sand paper
- Resene Colorwood interior wood stain in Resene Walnut WD
- 1 piece of string about 50cm in length
- 5 x 150mm x 25mm glass test tubes with rim (available online)
Cost: $20 excluding Resene product.
Instructions
Step 1
Trim the 40mm x 10mm radiata moulding to 280mm in length. From one end, mark pilot holes at 40mm, 90mm, 140mm, 190mm and 240mm, then drill the holes with a 4mm drill bit.
Step 2
Secure the radiata moulding, then with a 25mm spade bit, carefully drill out the holes for the test tubes.
Step 3A
Measure in 10mm from each end of the wood and drill holes for the string hanger with a 4mm drill bit.
Step 3B
Sand off any rough edges, then paint or stain.
Step 4
Thread the string, then secure it in place with a stop knot at each end.
Step 5
Slide the test tubes in place, then hang up your propagation station.
