Surface preparation

General

Clean down thoroughly to remove all dirt, dust and loose material. Ensure surface is free from oil, grease and mould. If moss and mould are present, treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer (refer to label instructions and Data Sheet D80).

Wash and scrub the surface using Resene Timber and Deck Wash (refer to label instructions and Data Sheet D813) to maximise the degree of product penetration. Extra care should be taken if recoating weathered mineral oil stains or where this may be case.

Before applying any coating ensure the surface is clean and dry. Refer also to Resene Surface Information and Preparation Data Sheet (SIPDS) for Timber as appropriate.

Application

  1. Prepare as above. Stir well with a wide flat stirrer to achieve a uniform consistency before and during application.

  2. The colour or product appearance in the can may differ significantly from the final applied colour. Try on an offcut or an inconspicuous area before proceeding.

  3. Apply 2-3 coats of Resene Woodsman Natural Wood Oil, allowing dry time between coats.

  4. For maintenance coats, only 1 coat may be required.

  5. Where practical, stain all faces of the timber including the end grains.

  6. To avoid unsightly lap marks, ensure the stain is applied to the full length of each weatherboard or plywood sheet, working in a constant direction.

Apply using a synthetic brush or roller. For lightly textured surfaces/sawn timber apply using a Resene PAL No. 7 roller sleeve, for smooth panels and timber like plywood, apply using a Resene PAL No. 4 roller sleeve. For more information on staining weatherboards, refer to the Resene Project Video.

Dressed timber: 1st coat 10-12 sq. metres per litre. 2nd coat 10-12 sq. metres per litre. Band sawn and weathered timber: 1st coat 3-4 sq. metres per litre. 2nd coat 5-7 sq. metres per litre.
Dry film thickness 24 microns at 10 sq. metres per litre.
Dry time (minimum) 4 hours at 20°C
Recoat time (minimum) 2 for new work, 1-2 for old work
Usual no. of coats 2-3 for new work depending on colour, porosity and degree of weathering.
1-2 for maintenance applications.

Thinning

In hot, dry conditions Woodsman Natural Wood Oil may be thinned with up to 5% Resene Hot Weather Additive.

Clean Up and Product Responsibility

Clean up with water when wet or mineral turps when dry.

See online for guidance on cleanup and disposal without polluting the environment. Return any unwanted product or packaging to the PaintWise recycling service (NZ) or Paintback (AU).

Precautions

  1. Wear appropriate protection to avoid splashing into eyes and skin contact.

  2. All sanding dusts can be harmful. Always wear appropriate protection.

  3. Will not penetrate through existing coatings or very hard latewood bands.

  4. Contains powerful fungicides. Avoid skin contact. If any skin contact occurs, wash skin thoroughly with soap and water immediately. Do not scrub skin.

  5. Always colour test first on the timber to be stained to confirm that the choice of colour gives the result you want.

  6. Will not block tannin staining. If it occurs, it will tend to weather out over two to three months.
