Background to mural creation:
The school is always trying to enhance the school environment not only for the students and staff but also for the wider community who use the school in the evenings, at weekends and during holidays. The murals are also visible from the road for everyone to enjoy. The first two Resene murals portrayed the river, hills, bush and mountains, so this year for the third Resene mural, a coastal theme was decided on. Junior students loved drawing and painting their fantastic fish and there were many to choose from. In the different fish, the students from different countries painted ‘their patterns’ – Indian, Cambodian, Chinese, Japanese, Maori, Pasifika and Celtic. As soon as the mural team started on the patterns it became clear that it was also the perfect way to represent and honour all the different cultures that are at the school and how they all swim along together.
