Background to mural creation:
To tell the incredible story of a local hero: Hohāpata Te Kahupuku (1834-1913) was renowned for his imposing physique and physical strength. On 4th September 1863, a fierce storm wrecked the brigantine, Delaware, on the rocky Whakapuaka coast near Nelson. Residents from the nearby paā rushed to the beach. Hohāpata plunged into the raging surf and retrieved the lead-line thrown by one of the crew. He tied it to a second rope before hauling it to shore and securing it around another rock. With the other end fixed to the ship's cathead, those onboard were assisted along the rope, through the treacherous swell and safely to shore. The survivors were taken to the pā and given shelter, kai and warmth. This story is very important to the local iwi, Ngati Koata and collaborations were made throughout the whole designing and painting. Descendant tamariki of Hohāpata helped in painting the mural as well.
