Contemporary drawers

Give an old chest of drawers a modern revamp using a subtle two-tone combination of contemporary Resene colours.

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: an old varnished chest of drawers, a clean cloth, paintbrushes (including a medium artists’ brush) and sandpaper. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Putty and Resene Quarter Putty,

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Orchid White.

Other ideas: Create a warm grey effect by using a combination of Resene Hermitage and Resene Tiara.

Step one
Remove the drawers and lightly sand the outer unit and fronts of the drawers to provide a ‘key’.

Step two
Remove any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the outer unit, allowing two hours to dry

Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the front of each drawer, allowing two hours to dry.

Step five
Apply two coats of Resene Quarter Putty to the sides, top and front of the outer unit, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Putty to the front of each drawer, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Putty to the base section of the outer unit, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Quarter Putty to each of the drawer handles, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
