From cold to red hot

The Davis family had a large and drab area at the back of the house that housed the toilet, store room (ex-coal room), laundry and covered closed in back porch.

This had a single brick exterior, lined with hardboard in the toilet and laundry space, all uninsulated. As this was the only toilet it was awful to use in winter as was incredibly cold.

They also found it hard to keep and maintain heat in the house because it was sucked out into this area and lost. They lived with this for two winters before renovating.

As this area backs onto the master bedroom they have split the area, creating an ensuite bathroom, smaller laundry and separate toilet. Through the renovations they have insulated the walls and underfloor in the ensuite (as this was raised to be level with the bedroom) and fitted double glazed windows. The difference this has made to the back of the house has been amazing and made for much warmer winters.

10-12 years prior they redecorated a house they owned in Christchurch. During that renovation they used Resene Dynamite for a feature wall in one of the bedrooms. It took Erin a bit to convince her husband that this wasn't too rich and would look good, and on completing the room he agreed that it was good and said that it was a colour to remember for the future.

As this has been the first opportunity since, to paint it was on the top of their list. It was decided to go ahead with the colour once they found wallpaper for the master bedroom, which had red flowers on it that matched. They teamed it with Resene Half Biscotti on the main walls, with a white ceiling, trim and fittings/fixtures, to give added warmth to the rooms. It also provides flow from the exterior of the house which was painted in Resene Double Biscotti with Resene Malta trim a year earlier.

Thanks to Erin
