Undercover

Painting over existing wallpaper is a great way to avoid the dreaded task of stripping wallpaper, although cutting in on textured wallpaper can be a challenge as Chris and Hayley soon found out. Despite masking where the colours joined they eventually found freehand cutting in was the best way to achieve the result they were looking for, as the masking did not work well with the textured wallpaper.

Having purchased a home from friends, as soon as Chris and Hayley saw the room they knew that a new colour scheme of Resene Red Devil and Resene Blanc would work well. Because the open plan area included a kitchen, it was a matter of getting in and getting the work done quickly to minimise the inconvenience of an out of action kitchen. The full job took a week, with one coat of undercoat, then two coats of Resene Red Devil and two coats of Resene Blanc applied at a rate of one coat per night.

With the open plan area transformation complete, next on the list was the laundry. Now freshly coated in a colour scheme of Resene Sushi and Resene Bunting, the laundry feels crisp and clean regardless of how much dirty washing it contains.

Chris and Hayley's best tip for would-be DIY'ers? "Buy quality brushes and rollers".
