The hundred year old new house

This rebuild of a 100 year old Parnell villa aimed to recapture the original look on the outside (which had been partly lost through unsympathetic alterations) while creating a comfortable, practical and stylish interior.

Repainted exterior

The exterior colour scheme, Resene Halcyon for the weatherboards, Resene Blue Bayoux for the window surrounds and Resene Claret for the fretwork and detailing, were designed by friend and colour consultant Sharon Turner. It drew on the traditional villa paint style that highlighted the external ornamentation, while stepping away from the muddy palette currently used for many villas and also from the painted lady palette commonly used in the 1970s-80s.

The interior colours were chosen by the owners with assistance from Resene. The hallway with anaglypta painted with Resene Livewire below the dado line has traditional villa style, providing a bridge between the traditional exterior and more contemporary interior spaces.

The master bedroom was painted in Resene Rhapsody to echo the intense deep colours traditional in villas, while having a modern freshness. This was a ‘take a deep breath’ colour choice but now they love it and it gets rave reviews.

Resene Pearl Lusta graces the traditional villa style woodwork throughout the house providing continuity and a clean reminder of the villa essence of the house, even in the more contemporary spaces.

Their two children chose their own room colours – Resene Long Shot in one and Resene Bordello in the other.

The kitchen walls feature Resene Goblin to highlight the recycled Kauri flooring, Falcon stove and farmhouse style kitchen. The kitchen cabinetry was built from Kauri floor joists from the original house.

The main bathroom was painted Resene Aviator below the dado to accentuate the gorgeous lines of the Kohler bath.
