How to create your own wallpapered stairs

Use wallpaper samples to create a dramatic style to suit your home's decor. Use it as an accent detail on your stairs.

You will need
- Resene Wallpaper in your choice of designs – you can buy sample and cut lengths of selected Resene wallpapers at your local Resene ColorShop. Fleur used a different one for each stair, from bottom to top: Resene Wallpaper Collection 525755, 529029, E358000, E358012, Smi169816705, 365T9-3, GP5908, G8851, AT7094 and 605662
- Measuring tape
- Pencil and Ruler
- Scissors
- PVA glue
Top tips:
- Select Resene wallpapers that have a print that looks good side on/hung horizontally. This means you can cut the paper lengthways and have fewer joins than if it was cut across the width of the paper (as the stairs are wider than the width of wallpaper).
- When you first get your wallpaper samples, roll them up the opposite way, secure them with a rubber band and leave them like that for a day or so. This will help them to flatten out and they will be much easier to work with.

Step 1: Measure the width and height of your stair risers with a tape measure. Decide the order you want your wallpapers to run up the stairs.
Step 2: Using a pencil and ruler, mark the measurements out on the back of the Resene wallpaper and use scissors to cut the wallpaper out.
Step 3: Using PVA glue, run a bead of glue around the edge of the wallpaper and smear this out with your finger.
Step 4: Glue the Resene wallpaper into place on each of the stair risers.
Top tip: If you can’t find wallpaper designs to suit, use Resene testpots to paint onto Resene Anaglypta wallpaper, allow to dry, then cut and glue onto each of the stair risers.
