How to create a constellation canvas

Use a string of battery powered lights to create a starry landscape to decorate your home. Fleur Thorpe shows you how.
Wall colour stencil – Resene Tuna and Resene Gold
You will need
- Artist canvas (ours was 45.5cm x 35.5cm)
- Paintbrush
- Resene testpots in your choice of colours, Fleur used Resene Ebony Clay, Resene Black and Resene White
- Skewer
- 1 string of seed lights, 5m long, 50 lights in warm white
- Small artist paintbrush
Instructions
Step 1: Begin by painting the entire canvas in Resene Ebony Clay. (Photo 1).
Step 2: Once dry, use a metal or bamboo skewer to poke holes in the canvas. Make sure you do enough holes for the number of lights on your string of seed lights. (Photo 2).
Step 3: From the back of the canvas, push through a light into each hole. Secure the battery pack to the bottom inside edge of the canvas with a bit of tape. (Photo 3).

Step 4: You can hang your canvas at this point for a minimalist look… (Photo 4).
Step 5: Or alternatively, you can add a landscape scene and moon using Resene Black and Resene White. (Photo 5).

Detail
Top tip: Apply Resene FX Nightlight over Resene White for a glow-in-the-dark effect so you can see your constellation when the lights go out.
