Habitat bright ideas with Fleur Thorpe – DIY projects
Make a colourful bench seat out of concrete blocks finished in your favourite Resene paint colours.

Step 1
You need 24 concrete blocks for this project. Start by painting the inside of each of the holes with Resene Concrete Primer.
Step 2
Once the primer is dry, paint the holes in a variety of pinky-orange terracotta colours such as Resene Shilo, Resene Coral Tree, Resene Apple Blossom, Resene Hot August, Resene Japonica and Resene Sunbaked.
Step 3
To assemble the bench seat, lay the first layer of blocks as shown. Make sure the surface you build your bench seat on is flat and strong enough to hold the weight.
Step 4
For the next layer, off-set the blocks like a brick wall. This will create a stronger structure.
Step 5
Finish with the final third layer of blocks, top with a piece of 12mm exterior plywood and a squab.
Top tip: Finish the outside of the concrete blocks with Resene Concrete Primer followed by two coats of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen paint to help make the concrete surface easier to clean.
