The line between art and architecture is blurred in this project, which features Resene colours.

When does architecture become art? And vice versa? Both disciplines merge in this new house, which the design team says has been a dialogue between artist and architect.

A variety of spatial and formal tactics were employed to make an ambiguous distinction between the two disciplines, including the innovative use of colour.

Architectural specifier Kebbell Daish introduced a striped canvas to the front of the house, which is a direct reference to the work of French conceptual artist Daniel Buren. The canvas can be seen as a central artwork framed by the structural columns and the house behind, which are painted in Resene All Black and Resene Alabaster. The dark battens, shadows and lines on the wall also merge against the white backdrop to play tricks on the eye.

“Colour is not applied to this house – it is integral,” says the designer.

However, the canvas stripes can also be seen as just a simple balustrade and built-in deck chair from which to view paintings hanging inside the studio. They fluctuate between being the artwork itself and being a seat from which to look at artwork, the designer says.

Other shades include Resene Alto, Resene Amour and Resene Quarter Napa.
