Designed as part of the overall living space, this kitchen features colours and finishes chosen to blend with the rest of the décor. These include Resene Foggy Grey on walls and ceilings.

Open-plan kitchen integrated with livivng room

Kitchens today are increasingly likely to be integrated into family living areas. But in many homes, this arrangement calls for a sophisticated kitchen design – one that will complement a formal living room, for example.

The kitchen shown here is the pivotal room in a house designed by architect Brent Hulena.

“For this reason, we have tried to make it look less like a kitchen and more like part of the living area,” Hulena says.

Slick finishes and complementary colours help achieve this integration. The walls and ceilings feature Resene Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker collection.

Resene marketing manager Karen Warman says the company recognises that kitchens, like bathrooms and laundries, sometimes require special treatment to help prevent the build-up of bacteria and mould. For this reason, Resene has created a new product – Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. This paint combines the existing benefits of this low-sheen waterborne enamel with added anti-bacterial silver protection, and the mould protection of MoulDefender.

“Anti-bacterial silver protection is internationally recognised as a safe and healthy method of deodorising and sanitising surfaces that come into contact with skin, food and water,” says Warman.
