From the light-grey floor and ceiling, to the pohutukawa red cabinets and black island, Resene colours give this kitchen a taste of New Zealand.
In describing this winning entry in the recent ADNZ/Resene National Design Awards, the judges praised the spatial qualities of the kitchen and interior, which were reinforced by the “heroic use” of colour.

Otago architectural designer Gary Todd of Gary Todd Design says the Resene colours for both the exterior and interior of the multi award-winning home were chosen to endorse the design concept of the house rising from the river bed. In the kitchen, Resene Double Sea Fog walls act as a foil for the stronger accent colours of Resene Pohutukawa and Resene Black.
“These shades, which are used on the cabinetry in a 50% gloss lacquer, introduce warmth and strength to the New Zealand-themed interior,” says Todd. ‘The colours are linked to the living room, which features black and red furnishings.”
Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom paint was used on the walls and ceilings. This paint combines the benefits of a low-sheen waterborne enamel with anti-bacterial silver protection, and mould protection by MoulDefender.
Resene marketing manager Karen Warman says anti-bacterial silver protection is internationally recognised as a safe and healthy method of deodorising and sanitising surfaces that come into contact with skin, food and water.
