Takapuna

The colour approach was fresh and reflective of the exterior environment; the timber finishes offered a warmth and friendliness to the space.

Set in a new development right on the edge of the reserve looking over Takapuna beach and out to Rangitoto an exciting space and opportunity was to be built. The client provided the brief to create a unique offering for the locals of Takapuna. A social and accessible hub to encompass the beach moment of the prime location while providing a sense of community.

Ctrl Space had to deliver a great daytime moment with a strong indoor outdoor presence to cue the casual style of eating offering both dine in and takeaway. Francs needed to be energetic and fresh and accessible to everyone any time of day.

The design approach was to be layered and functional; there was to be a practical working element to the storage that felt integrated into the space. The client developed a brand that had an attitude which was considered and executed in a space that doesn’t feel fussy, it’s creative and simple and user friendly. The base build offered a palette of timber LVL’s, ply clad walls and concrete floors which were embraced and added to. There is a great warmth and friendliness achieved through the material and colour selections.

The colour approach was fresh and reflective of the exterior environment; the timber finishes offered a warmth and friendliness to the space, allowing the architectural aspects to be highlighted in black then a playfulness was brought in with the fun pop of green in the back bar tiling. The back bar customer wood tiles are finished in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Black, structural LVL beams in Resene Pitch Black and bulkheads and upper level painting in Resene Half Merino.

The back bar tiling was created a pattern using painted timber blocks in Resene Lucky Break, Resene Half Taupe Grey and Resene Half Merino. This came about because of the lack of coloured tiles available on short lead times locally. These timber tiles were able to be read as part of the ceramic tiles used in the kitchen and dining areas creating a synergy and connection between the spaces. A full pattern repeat was created in the studio and executed amazingly onsite. The painted timber tiles were also a great option from the flexibility that they offered, as they were much easier and less labour intensive to install and layering over shelving and styling elements was easily achieved with a tidy finish.
