Whale Bay Alfresco Chalet
Waikato Home & Garden Show
This was a display I created as an entry for the ‘New Zealand Interior Design Awards’ which was held at the Waikato Home and Garden show.
The brief we were given was to design and build a space around the theme of ‘Four Seasons’.
I chose to do a spring come summer setting and created a chalet, situated on the foreshore of Whale Bay in Raglan. Envisioning stunning views, showcasing the ocean and surf, surrounded by sub-tropical gardens and opening out onto a paved pool area. It was important to incorporate these elements indoors as well, using natural textures, rustic timbers, stone flooring and serene blues.
The main focus of the design concept was the amazing piece of artwork titled ‘Bird’, which I then carefully built my colours around for the overall décor.
The three paint colours I used were Resene Half Black White on the ceilings, Resene Sea Fog on the main wallpapered walls and Resene Polo Blue on the feature wall.
The walls were finished with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen and the ceilings were finished with two coats of Resene Zylone Low Sheen.
The wallpaper was a ‘Vision’ paper with a subtle grid style texture which was used to add some warmth to the room.
For the overall palette, charcoals were used to give ‘bright and breezy’ a grounded appeal, enhancing it with calming blues to capture the intrinsic haziness of a coastal environment, and contrasting these were crisp whites and linens to give the perfect finishing touch to a relaxed, alfresco living space.
It really was a place that you could happily go home to after a stressful day at work to rejuvenate your body, mind and soul, with no distractions from the outside world; somewhere to process your thoughts and ideas... dreaming about your next Resene project.
