Resene Central Region Specifier Services Manager Craig Ell joins us to discuss concrete carbonisation and coatings. Craig has been with Resene for 17 years and works daily with architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, property owners/developers and large building contractors on a wide range of projects. Heritage buildings are of special interest to Craig having worked closely with numerous architects on over 100 projects and finding them very satisfying and challenging.

Having completed and passed the NACE Level 1 Coatings Inspector in 2012 Craig has won a number of Resene technical and achievement awards acknowledging his expertise.

Resene Architectural and Specifier Representative David King joins us to discuss concrete walls and floors and the challenges they present when we’re wanting to paint or clear coat them along with how we’d expect them to perform over time.

David has over 20 years’ experience within technical building industry roles and enjoys the challenge of new projects whether big or small, complex or simple. Knowing that paints, stains and clear finishes can totally transform a project, David focusses on getting the details right and enjoys being involved in the process from concepts and site visits to specifications, colour matches and custom samples. David has also successfully undertaken the NACE Level 1 Coatings Inspector course.

Feng Shui for the 21st Century – East Meets West

Resene is pleased to be joined again by Tracie Rodwell-Dunne, owner of the Beaumont School of Interior Decorating & Design.

Tracie is an expert in Feng Shui and has professionally applied the principals of Feng Shui to design projects for a number of decades. Tracie teaches and practices a very specific form of Feng Shui which is based on the original principles of Feng Shui going back more than 3,000 years and is very relevant today. She has carried out more than 200 Feng Shui Readings for both domestic and commercial clients.

"Feng Shui is the art of creating harmony and balance in our lives and surroundings. The original intent of Feng Shui is to create a balanced energy within a space both physically and emotionally. Good design instinctively has a balanced Feng Shui energy about it, but most people today are out of balance energetically and this is reflected in our environments." Tracie states.

In this webinar, Tracie will cover two aspects of Feng Shui … the energy created by the design of a space and … the energy we manifest within the space.

Intumescent Coatings for Steelwork

From within the Resene Group of Companies, Altex Coatings Australasian Technical Services Manager Garth Moran joins us to give an overview on intumescent coatings.

Garth discusses the primary driver of the use of intumescent coatings as well as the most commonly raised questions with regards to intumescent coatings which are covered in the Code of Practice including:

• Standoff distances between intumescent coated steelwork and timber framing/cladding elements etc and some options on how to correctly design around.
• Allowances for attachments to fire rated members.
• Distance paint needs to extend along non-fire rated members i.e. coatback distance.
• Who actually does the design and certification? If a fire engineer says 60/-/- is needed, then a general note on a structural drawing saying 60/-/- , what happens after that? What information is needed to construct an intumescent coatings schedule?
• QA controls.
• Tray deck gaps/Trapezoidal composite flooring – what is done here?
• Maintenance and longevity of intumescent systems, corrosion vs protection of the intumescent

Specified versus Perceived colour

Resene has teamed up again with leading Australian expert Dr Zena O'Connor to discuss Specified versus Perceived colour.

In the built environment, colour scheme specification for both interior spaces and exterior building façades can sometimes be problematic. Not simply in terms of aesthetics or functionality, but due to the range of factors that can directly impact or influence perception of specified colour, creating a situation where perceived colour differs from specified colour. Aside from the complexity of both colour and human perception of colour, there are a number of factors that impact perception of colour in respect to interior spaces and exterior façades.

These factors, which impact colour scheme development and need to be considered during the development process, include the influence of contextual colour, simultaneous contrast effect, as well as variations in ambient lighting. This discussion will refer to colour specification strategies that can be employed to manage and/or mitigate the factors that impact specified colour and, to a certain extent, also address client-related issues. These strategies will be examined with reference to case studies that focus on recent projects.

Bio:  Director of Lucas Associates Limited, Christchurch, a Registered NZILA Landscape Architect and life member of NZILA, Di works in community-friendly planning and design processes for creative and sustainable solutions. Having skills in landscape assessment, landscape ecology and restoration, natural character analysis, community consultation, heritage values, sustainable resource management, creative problem solving and documentation, Di works on a range of projects around Aotearoa New Zealand. Projects vary in scale from broad frameworks and design guides for regions, districts and towns to planning development or restoration for specific sites, working for community, industry, landowners, iwi and government agencies. The Lucas Associates team has twice been awarded New Zealand's premier landscape planning award, the NZILA Charlie Challenger Award, and in 2012 Di was the recipient of the Resene Total Colour Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2019 Di was awarded the ONZM.
