Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Bucket, garden hose with clean running water, gate latch and screws, paintbrushes, painted wooden gate, Resene Moss & Mould Killer, Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Vanquish, rubber gloves, screwdriver, stiff-bristled brush.

To get the look: Mark painted the stucco pillars with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Pipi.

Other ideas: For a traditional crisp white, paint the gate with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Half Alabaster.

How to paint your front gate

Step one
Carefully lift the wooden gate from its hinges.

Step two
Remove the old gate latch.

Step three
Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water.

Step four
Wearing rubber gloves, thoroughly soak the gate with the solution and leave for 48 hours.

Step five
Mix one part Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to three parts clean water.

Step six
Scrub the gate vigorously with the solution using a stiff-bristled brush and rinse off with clean water. Allow to dry.

Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Vanquish to the gate, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eight
Rehang the gate and fit the replacement gate latch.
