How to make a barrel planter
Use solventborne Resene Woodsman penetrating oil stain to transform a wooden half-barrel into a stylish citrus planter.

Difficulty level: Easy
You will need: a wooden half-barrel, drill with 10mm drill bit, sandpaper, artist’s brush, paintbrush and turps for washing the brush. Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain which is tinted to Resene Pitch Black.
To get the look: Mark used a Lemon ‘Meyer’ for this planter and painted the background fence with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Spindle.

Instructions
Step one
Lightly sand the barrel to remove any marks and splinters – pay particular attention to the sawn edge.
Step two
Drill five 10mm drainage holes in the bottom of the planter.
Step three
Carefully apply one coat of Resene Pitch Black, starting with the inner rim of the barrel, as shown.
Step four
Continue to apply the Resene Woodsman oil stain, working around the top edge of the rim, as shown.
Step five
Apply the Resene Woodsman oil stain to the top section of the barrel, taking care not to get any on the metal band.
Step six
Continue to apply the Resene Woodsman oil stain to the next section of the barrel. Again, take care not to get any on the metal bands.
Step seven
Use the artists’ brush to apply Resene Woodsman oil stain to the final narrow band of wood. Leave to dry for 24 hours to dry.
Step eight
Apply a second coat to the barrel, following the steps above and leave for a further 24 hours before planting up with good quality potting mix and a small citrus tree.
