Funky drawers
Transform an old set of drawers into a funky piece of furniture using a contrasting combo of Resene colours.
Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 04
Difficulty level: Easy
You will need: an old painted or varnished chest of drawers, a clean cloth, paintbrushes (including an artists’ brush), sandpaper and wood filler. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Bullseye and Resene Howzat.
To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Zeal.
Other ideas: Create another vibrant cool/hot combination using Resene Balloon and Resene Resolution Blue.
Step one
Remove the drawers from the unit and fill any holes with wood filler. Allow to dry.
Step two
Sand the wood filler to create a smooth surface, and then sand the entire chest of drawers to provide a ‘key’. Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the main unit and allow two hours to dry.
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the drawer fronts and handles and allow two hours to dry.
Step five
Apply two coats of Resene Bullseye to the sides and front of the unit, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Howzat to the fronts of each drawer, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Howzat to the top and base of the unit, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Bullseye to the handles on each drawer, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
