Blue metallic cabinet

Transform a humble MDF bedroom cabinet into a metallic masterpiece with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 07

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: a MDF bedroom cabinet, paintbrush, paint stirrer, paint tray, roller and sandpaper. Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Quick Dry, Resene Sandtex Mediterranean effect, Resene Enamacryl Metallic tinted to Resene Yeehaa and Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Optimist.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall and skirting with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Alamo.

Other ideas: Try a sizzling red combination of Resene Adrenalin Junkie and Resene Old Brick.

Step one
Lightly sand the MDF cabinet to provide a ‘key’.

Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the cabinet and allow two hours to dry.

Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Sandtex to the cabinet, lightly stippling the paint to create surface texture. Allow to dry.

Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Optimist to the cabinet and allow two hours to dry.

Step five
Paint the inside of the cabinet with a second coat of Resene Optimist and allow two hours to dry.

Step six
Stir the Resene Yeehaa using a flat wooden paint stirrer.

Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Yeehaa to the outside of the cabinet, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear gloss to the outside of the cabinet, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
