Drawer shelves
Transform an old kitchen drawer into a funky shelf unit with a little bit of help from Resene.
Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 48
Difficulty level: Moderate
You will need: Clean cloth, filler, large clamps (x2), old kitchen drawer, paintbrush, piece of 50mm x 50mm timber cut to fit the width of the drawer, putty knife or similar, PVA glue, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Wellywood, Resene Quick Dry, sandpaper, screw driver.
To get the look: Mark painted the background tongue and groove panel with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Turbo.
Other ideas: For a shiny red effect, paint the drawer with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Havoc.
Step one
Remove the handle from the drawer.
Step two
Remove any lining from inside the drawer.
Step three
Lightly sand the piece of 50mm x 50mm timber and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step four
Fit the piece of 50mm x 50mm timber across the back of the drawer to fill the gap and fix with PVA glue. Clamp the wood into position until the glue has dried. (This may not be necessary if your drawer doesn’t have a gap at the back).
Step five
Fill any holes and gaps and allow the filler to dry.
Step six
Sand the entire drawer (especially the filled areas) and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step seven
Apply one coat of
Resene Quick Dry to the drawer and allow two hours to dry.
