Product spotlight
Vertical timber cladding has become a popular trend in building designs and should ideally be finished with a product that both enhances and preserves the natural beauty of timber.
Resene’s technical team formulated Resene Woodsman Natural Wood Oil as an easy and effective way to get a subtly-coloured look on vertical timber surfaces and ceilings – dressed and bandsawn timber, cedar, redwood, weatherboards, engineered timbers, plywood and profiled sheets. It can be used on both interior and exterior timber, including vertical and horizonal cladding, but bear in mind it’s not suitable for use on decks or flooring.

Resene Woodsman Natural Wood Oil can be tinted to 21 colours inspired by some of New Zealand’s most loved national and forest parks, ranging from barely-there hues to bold orange, deep browns and off-black. In addition to these new shades, the full range of Woodsman colours is also available with dark shades able to be tinted using CoolColour technology.
Natural finish, easier application
Resene Woodsman Natural Wood Oil delivers a quality, natural-looking finish that enhances rather than hides the beauty of timber. Its water-based technology also supports productivity and cost-effectiveness, while its relatively high viscosity makes it easier and cleaner to apply than lower-viscosity oils.
Overcoating mineral oil stainsImportantly, it can also be used to overcoat mineral oil stains, an area that has traditionally created challenges for painters and property owners. This helps reduce the risk of unexpected complications and added cost of rectifying any failed areas when re-staining surfaces previously finished with mineral oils.

After
It delivers same quality of finish as products often more than twice the cost and, depending on the colour selected and the environment, only needs recoating in three or four seasons, as opposed to the two seasons most others need.
It’s far easier to apply than other oils stains as it has a higher viscosity. Others are similar to applying water – very messy!
Resene Woodsman Natural Wood Oil is formulated on a unique blend of resins and oils, including a proportion of renewable content. These are bio-based, sustainable alternatives to traditional petrochemical based raw materials and are obtained from natural, regenerative sources such as plant oils. This reduces the dependence on fossil fuels and lowers carbon footprints.

Timber stains are thinner than most paints in order to achieve penetration. This brings a tendency for pigments (tinters, etc) to settle. It’s best practice to not only stir thoroughly before use, but every 10-15 minutes while using to ensure the stain retains colour consistency.
Resene Woodsman Natural Wood Oil is a unique stain that can look and behave differently in-can compared to application – this means some colours look different in their wet state than their finished look. It’s essential then to check on an offcut or in a non-critical area before applying.
When staining new timber cladding, we recommend envelope-sealing to help reduce cupping and warping. Professional painters pricing to stain new cladding should discuss the option of pre-staining with the head contractor or owner.

Woodsman Natural Wood Oil can be applied over well-weathered mineral oils, provided the timber has been prepared using Resene Timber and Deck Wash. Prior to this development, mineral oil stains (including Dryden, Wood-X and CD50) could only be successfully and consistently re-coated with another mineral oil.
Avoid water blasting easily damaged timbers like cedar – it’s too aggressive and damaging. Timber and Deck Wash is ideal for preparing previously stained timbers and weathered unstained timbers.
If using dark stains, consider using the CoolColour version. It’s more durable and helps prevent warping, cupping and other heat-related issues. It’s also a great opportunity to upsell and demonstrate your industry expertise and knowledge.
