It’s easy to recycle an old wooden bed head into a smart painted fence with a little bit of help from Resene.

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 58

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: 75mm exterior screws, clean cloth, drill, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Pale Prim, Resene Quick Dry, sandpaper, old wooden bed head (unpainted), paint stirrer, paintbrush, pencil, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Pale Prim, Resene Quick Dry, sandpaper, saw, screwdriver, spirit level, tape measure.

To get the look: Mark stained the background fence with Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene English Walnut.

Other ideas: For a more traditional look, paint the fence with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Alabaster.

How to build a garden fence

 
Step 1Step one
Remove the side posts from the bed head and then measure, mark and cut the bed head to the required size.
Step 2Step two
Place the bed head into position to form the new fence, using the spirit level to ensure that it’s level.
Step 3Step three
Fix with 75mm screws, drilling pilot holes first.
Step 4Step four
Sand the fence and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 5Step five
Carefully stir the Resene Quick Dry.
Step 6Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the fence and allow to dry.
Step 7Step seven
Carefully stir the Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Pale Prim.
Step 8Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Pale Prim to the fence, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
