How to make a strawberry planter

It’s easy to revamp an old wooden half barrel to create this smart strawberry planter.

You will need: Bucket, garden hose with clean running water, garden sprayer, gardening gloves, good quality potting mix, old wooden half barrel or timber planter, paintbrush, Resene Moss & Mould Killer, Resene Timber and Deck Wash, Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Pitch Black, rubber gloves, stiff-bristled brush, strawberry plants, trowel.s

To get the look: Mark painted the background shed wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Soft Apple.

Other ideas: For a rich dark red effect, stain the half barrel with Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Cherrywood.

Instructions

Step one
In the garden sprayer, mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water.

Step two
Wearing rubber gloves, spray and soak the half barrel with the solution and leave for 48 hours.

Step three
Mix one part Resene Timber and Deck Wash to three parts clean water.

Step four
Scrub the half barrel thoroughly with the solution using a stiff bristled brush.

Step five
Rinse well with clean water and allow the half barrel to dry.

Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain to the half barrel, allowing each coat to dry.

Step seven
Wearing gardening gloves, fill the half barrel with good quality potting mix.

Step eight
Carefully plant the strawberry plants in the potting mix and then water well.
