How to make distressed garden shelves
It’s easy to create a distressed paint effect using two contrasting Resene colours.

You will need:
- Bucket
- Clean cloth, clean water
- Garden hose with running water
- Paint stirrer, paintbrush
- Sandpaper, stiff bristled brush
- Wooden shelving unit made from treated timber
- Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Nourish
- Resene Quick Dry
- Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Willow Brook
- Resene Timber and Deck Wash
To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Half Dutch White.
Other ideas: For a warmer effect try a combination of Resene Rich Cream over a base coat of Resene Florentine Pink.
Instructions
Step one Mix one part Resene Timber and Deck wash to three parts clean water and scrub the solution into the wooden shelving unit, keeping the surface wet for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry.
Step two Carefully stir the Resene Quick Dry.
Step three Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the wooden shelving unit and allow to dry.
Step fourCarefully stir the Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Nourish.
Step five Apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Nourish to the wooden shelving unit, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step six Carefully stir the SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Willow Brook.
Step seven Apply one coat of SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Willow Brook, brushing in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry.
Step eight Lightly sand the shelving unit in random areas to reveal the colour underneath. Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
